WHEW! WHEW! One more time, WHEW!!!!
Dinky made it through his surgery with no complications!! This is SUCH a big step!! It was initially complicated a little bit by the fact that last night he lost his "central line" through which he receives a lot of his medication. These are not easy to get in and it was a big loss (this is the line that we went on our first "field trip" for back in March). So before they started surgery they had to put in a new line. Then they connected his esophagus. The complication could have been that there was so much space between the two ends that they can't be stretched together, but his two ends were just right there waiting for each other! It all went very smoothly. To quote the surgeon, "nothing went wrong". We are just SO relieved. Dinky is obviously very zonked right now but should start waking up sometime tonight. The "recovery" period for this will probably be about a week until we really know where we stand. Thank you ALL for your positive thoughts and prayers. (As I sit here in the resource center typing this I am listening to a bad muzak version of "My Way", but it's touching a chord today. Dinky is doing this his way (Martin's groaning beside me :), and he's teaching us a lot of valuable lessons!)

And it's wonderfully joyous news in rainy, dreary NC as well! Funny thing is that when your mom e-mailed me the good news earlier, I e-mailed her back with a subject line that said, "Whew!" Now, I read today's comments, and I see there's been a lot of "whew-ing" all over the place. Whew!
love...

Tonight when I talked with DInky's Mom and learned that Dinky was complaining about his sense that something was "up" when he was going to surgery (eyes darting around on his way), about his discomfort (thrashing his legs and arms and crying), and pain following surgery... as strange as it might seem, I thought, maybe this is a good thing. This is his second birth, entering the real world. He is seeing what is around him. He is feeling love and he wants more of that and he is demanding less of the pain that he has had... without sedation.
He is coming to life. That is a good, yet painful thing.
Today is indeed a landmark in his little, yet giant life. We have all learned from what he, his Mom and Dad have endured...yet this is a life earned through endurance. WOW.
This little guy has taught us all a lot about endurance. So have his Mom and Dad. So have the medical professionals who have taken him to heart and given him a future. So have all the friends, family (and even a couple of stangers) who have followed his story.
Thank you all for keeping our Dinky in your thoughts, hearts and prayers. This has been a special day and this will be a special weekend. Dinky's Mom's first Mother's Day, his Dad's first Mother's Day as a father and Edison, (Eddie, Dinky, Spunky's) first Mother's Day as a son. WOW.
I am so happy for you all, and I am thinking of you alot. So even though I might be a bit distracted right now, please don't think that I am not loving and supporting all three of you all the time!!!
Love, Sue
