Unfortunately the third time was not a charm for the swallowing test. Edison was in a GREAT mood and was smiling at everyone. He took the bottle and was able to get some of the barium, but he just didn't swallow it. Having it in and around his mouth upset him and then he started crying. We know he swallows, he just doesn't seem to be able to coordinate it with sucking from the bottle. A part of me thinks if they gave him a little spoonful of baby food it might be a different story. One day we'll try.
He is gaining weight like a champ and is just shy of twelve pounds. He really looks great.

I'm not a doctor, but if I were a baby and being given the choice of milk, apple juice, or something that actually tastes good, vs. "barium" (which I have actually tasted)... I would choose the former. What if, (just an old grandad's idea) you gave him something that might taste natural...even if it is water... to see if he swallows it, before going to the barium??
As I said, I am not a doc, but just wanting to help.
I know none of this is easy for any of you, even the staff. Our hopes and love are with you all.
Love all,
Pa
Just a follow up on the barium...the reason they have to do that is to "see" it on an x-ray. They have to see him swallow it, make sure he doesn't aspirate any into his lungs, and then make sure it all goes down his esophagus which is very narrow. We can do "dips" with him with water and formula, but not the volume they need to check to see if he's "safe" to bottle feed.
Amen, brother GG! Chocolate is surely the answer, in moderation of course! Maybe. Depends.
Actually, the only thing involved here that is not in moderation is the love we hold for each of you, highlighted with lots of respect. love...
